The HP Stream was first announced by Microsoft at WPC 2014 a few months ago as a $200 ‘Chromebook Killer’. Today the Stream 14, which runs Windows 8.1 on AMD processor, has been officially unveiled to the masses. The bad news is that it will actually cost you closer $300, the good news is that it does in fact appear to be a solid alternative to Chromebooks everywhere. We caught up with the device just prior to launch. Check out the video below.

The Stream 8 from Hewlett-Packard is a 14 inch device that obviously caters for the lower, entry-level end of the market, so there is no surprise to find that the display has a resolution of 1366 x 768. The display itself uses a TN LCD panel which does not include touch-screen capability unfortunately, but at this price point that is not such a shocker. Compared to today’s IPS screens the viewing angles, color and brightness levels are not fantastic, but considering the price point it is in fact totally acceptable and decent TN panel.
The Stream 14 is powered by an AMD A4 Micro-6400T APU based on the company’s new “Mullins” platform. It’s a dual core processor which offers standard clocks of 1.0GHz that can boost as high as 1.6GHz in single threaded applications. The A4 APU is joined by 2 GB RAM and 32 GB of flash memory.
The performance offered by the Stream 14 will not be comparable to Intel’s Core line up but there will be plenty of horsepower for general office applications and web browsing. The fairly minimal storage of the device also marks it as a connected or cloud device that is dependent in cloud hosted storage much in the same way as today’s Cloudbooks, a main competitor to the HP Stream, retailing at pretty similar price points.
