HTC will stream its live event to its website, begins 7:00AM PT on March 1st

On March 1st, HTC will officially unveil the HTC One M9 to the world. While we’ve seen the M9 leak in pretty excruciating detail this week, this morning HTC’s Jeff Gordon claimedthat the “best parts of HTC’s March 1st launch event are the parts you have NO IDEA are coming”. Whether that statement means bigger surprises are in store for us or HTC is merely attempting to save face, HTC has now announced the entire event will be live streamed from HTC’s website for those curious to see what the phone maker delivers over the weekend.

The HTC press event will begin at 7:00AM PT (10:00AM ET) this Sunday, and of course Android Authority will be on the scene bringing you all the details and a closer look at the M9 and anything else HTC debuts. Are you still excited to see what HTC has in store for us, or has the recent leaks taken much of your excitement away?

New leaked images show off the Samsung Galaxy S6 in full

As the launch date for the Galaxy S6 is getting closer, we’re hearing more and more rumors about Samsung’s next big handset. We’ve heard a ton of rumors regarding the Galaxy S6’s build quality, and that it will likely feature much more premium materials than we’ve seen from Samsung devices in the past. Today we get another leak of the handset, and it’s quite a detailed one. A user posted pictures on XDA of what’s purported to be the Galaxy S6. While the majority of the phone is wrapped in bubble wrap, we can still see that these are the clearest photos of the handset so far.

The back of the device doesn’t show anything out of the ordinary. We’re seeing a camera module with a flash towards the top of the device, and that’s about all we can make out for that image. The side of the device is also shown off, revealing the metallic edging that wraps around the device. The last image, also covered by bubble wrap, shows off the front of the handset. Again, there’s not too much out of the ordinary with this one either – a home button, a front-facing camera and a big screen – all placed in their normal spots. The home button does appear to be a tad bigger than previous versions, but that’s about the only notable change we can see from the leak so far.

Judging from the leaked images and all of the other leaks we’ve heard up to this point, this is turning out to be one attractive device. What are your thoughts on the new leaked images?

Developer MohammadAG gets Android Wear to work with iPhones, sort of

Google has hinted that it could eventually make Android Wear work with iPhones, but as the wearables platform is getting close to its first birthday, we’re yet to see an official integration. The good news is, if you really want to use your Android Wear smartwatch with an iOS device, an unofficial solution may be coming.

Android developer Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh, widely known on XDA as MohammadAG, found a way to push notifications from iOS to AW. MohammadAG, who is known for his work developing Xposed Framework modules, used a feature called Apple Notification Center Service (ANSC) that was first introduced on iOS7. This is the same feature that allowsPebble to receive notifications from iPhones via Bluetooth. Because it’s built into the operating system, making use of ANSC doesn’t require a special app – notifications from any app can be pushed automatically to a connected smartwatch.

To enable the feature, MohammadAG created an .apk that needs to run on the smartwatch, and the developer said he’s considering open-sourcing it. You will still need an Android device to set up the smartwatch and get apps on it, but the good news is you can use any iOS7 or higher Apple device, no jailbreak required.

Now, the Android Wear experience is more than just notifications and MohammadAG admits that this ANSC-based implementation is limited. But if you just want simple notifications, this could do. We’ll keep an eye on this little project and let you know when, if ever, becomes available.

New Google Now card shows gas stations on your route

Thanks to the relentless work of Google’s engineers and the huge amount of computing power that the company can throw at any problem, Google Now is getting smarter all the time. The latest addition to the personal assistant service is a card that shows gas stations found on and nearby your current route.

The feature was first spotted by Google Plus user Kevin McLaughlin and doesn’t appear to be dependent on navigation. The phone detects that the user is driving down a route that, we assume, the user has used before, and shows nearby gas stations, along with directions, distance, and the detour required to reach each station.

It would be really nice if Google were able to pull in gas prices for each station, but even in this form, the feature can be very useful. With that said, checking gas stations on Google Now isn’t something you’d normally do while driving, but perhaps Google has bigger plans for this feature.

Have you seen this new card? Let us know what seems to trigger it.

Samsung Galaxy S6 is all about speed and might support multiple wireless charging standards

Samsung has hinted that the Galaxy S6 smartphone might support multiple wireless charging standards, moving it away from the traditional plug in the wall method of charging.
Wireless charging could come into its own this year and Samsung’s there to grab it. The S6 has also been previewed in a couple of videos that focus on the handset’s camera and the speed of the S6.
Intelligent camera technology will be a leading feature of the S6, as well as the choice of processor Samsung drops into it.
There is also talk of an even nippier system thanks to the reduction of Samsung’s bloatware, which would keep the pace up to speed.

Third Party Sites Selling Xiaomi Phones Illegaly in India

If you really want a Xiaomi phone and can’t seem to get one from official sources, you probably can get it from shadier stores. Well, Xiaomi obviously doesn’t like that and seeing how they’re almost the world’s third largest smartphone maker, they have the resources to make the problem go away.
eca86bd9e0d1139371b30a
Thus, it would appear that Xiaomi will take legal action against websites that sell its phones illegally and infringe on the company’s trademark in India. Meanwhile, the same company has a patent dispute with Ericsson, also happening in India. The Swedish firm claims that Xiaomi was selling phones with MediaTek CPUs via Xiaomishop.com, which violates the Delhi High Court that allows them to only sell Qualcomm-based handsets.
This is actually not Xiaomi’s fault and the Ericsson suit is caused by third party stores who don’t seem to care that they should only sell MediaTek Xiaomi phones in India. They are selling the Qualcomm-based units and also at higher than usual prices. The Xiaomishop.com site was not functional anymore, so Xiaomi is ready to proceed with legal action against it and four or five sites selling Xiaomi products illegally.
Flipkart and Airtel remain authorized Xiaomi resellers in India.

Sony unveils the least obvious audiophile product ever

When we try to work out what we’ll need for top quality sound, the player is important, the headphones are vital, the cable technology could be considered…a headphone amp too maybe? But wait, we forgot the memory card!
Sony Japan will release the SR-64HXA memory card, a class 10 microSD unit that fits 64GB of data and costs in yen the equivalent of $155.
The Sony Walkman NW-ZX2 is the player they’re pushing to use with this card and as that costs more than $1,000, what’s an extra $150 on top for some smooth, quiet data playback?

ASUS to Release New CPU Versions of ZenFone 2: More Affordable Qualcomm Model and New MediaTek Unit

One of the most interesting launches of CES 2015 was certainly the ASUS ZenFone 2 smartphone, with its crazy 4 GB of RAM. Now the handset is ready to have derived versions from the original specs announced at CES.
asus-zenfone-2
Originally, we knew this powerhouse of a phone would come with an Intel Atom Z3580 processor, a quad core chipset accompanied by PowerVR G6430 graphics. Now, there appear to be two more version of the 5.5 inch handset, one with a MediaTek CPU and the other with a Qualcomm. Focus Taiwan has it on good authority that the ZenFone 2 will come soon in Qualcomm and MediaTek versions.
The Qualcomm-based ZenFone 2 will be priced lower and it will come in the second quarter of the year, being targeted towards the mainstream market. And then the ZenFone 2 with MediaTek will hit markets where 3G phones are popular, like India. That version will arrive in the second half of 2015, as a sort of successor of the Intel model.
In the meantime the OG ZenFone 2 is coming to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, China and France next month. More countries will get it in April or May and Brazil for example will get it in June.

An Unreleased Acer Smartphone Called Liquid Z (S57) Gets WiFi Certification

Today, as we get to know from a Japanese source, it seems that a new unreleased Acer smartphone was certified by the WiFi Agency. The name of this model is Liquid Z (S57), and from what we can suggest, this one could be officially introduced at Mobile World Congress in March.
Screenshot (100)
Even if other specs of the phone are still unknown, we found out that on the software side, Acer will introduce Android 4.4.4 KitKat on it. Also, according to the certification, the phone is compatible with the Wireless LAN 802.11 b/g/n standard.
From what is rumored, this Acer Liquid Z (S57) could be announced as Acer Jade Z for the European market. It remains to see what other leaks we’ll have next any if indeed the phone will be released in this Spring.

Verykool SL4500 LTE Phone Gets Passed Through the FCC Testing

Verykool USA has a new handset out there ready for launch, a LTE model dubbed Verykool SL4500 and this unit just passed the FCC testing. The product comes with FDD-LTE, as well as WCDMA, Bluetooth and WiFi.
sl4500
Its WiFi works in the 2.4 GHz band, but not in the 5.x GHz one. Verykool SL4500 runs Android 4.4.4 and relies on a 64 bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, clocked at 1.2 GHz. It offers support for LTE Category 4, that can reach as high as 150 Mbps in download speed and 50 Mbps in upload. I should also mention that the new Verykool product comes with dual SIM slots, including a micro SIM and a mini SIM one.
Its battery capacity is 1700 mAh and the target market are the Americas for this smartphone. The design reminds me of a HTC Desire phone quite a bit, with a large speaker placed below the capacitive buttons and some reasonably sized bezels.
