ASUS is the latest mobile giant to throw its hard into the IFA ring as the Taiwanese company has scheduled a press event for September 3rd. However, while most other companies will be rolling out new smartphones, ASUS will be launching a new smart watch to compete with the likes of LG, Samsung, and of course Motorola.
The company more or less gives the secret away with its press invite, which clearly shows a silhouetted smart watch against a black background. ASUS has long been rumoured to be working on an Android Wear device, so the fact that IFA will be the Launchpad for that product makes plenty of sense. ASUS is also looking to maintain its reputation for delivering quality devices at affordable prices as the company's smart watch will cost between $100 and $150.
That would make it the least expensive Google approved Android Wear device available, and if it can pack the feature list of rival devices then it could find a sizeable market. Certainly, at that price point the ASUS device will land perfectly in impulse buy territory and will be compelling if the company can get the hardware and software right.
Considering ASUS usually offers solid designs, we expect this smart watch to look okay, well at least as far as a square can watch. It does seem obvious that the device is squared off, although it is not plainly obvious from the images above. The device does seem to have a metal strip around its face though, although we are guessing the cost of the smart watch means that it is faux metal.
LG's G Watch and Samsung's Galaxy Gear Live will be ASUS' immediate rivals in the wearable market, but the company could have a trump card over those products with price alone. The Moto 360 from Motorola is another matter though, that higher end smart watch with a round face is due to launch the day after ASUS' example. However, with the 360 costing $250, ASUS probably believes there is room for its lower cost offering in the market too.
We will be at IFA so will bring you all of the details regarding the ASUS smart watch.
