For the past week, I’ve been offline during the evenings.
I was offline all this weekend.
There might be a ramp up that will keep me offline totally for either a few days or up to two weeks.
I’ll try to give a timeframe if I can get on the Net from elsewhere, but don’t be surprised if the blog doesn’t get updated beginning tomorrow (Tuesday, February 10, 2015).

8 common problems with the Amazon Fire Phone and how to fix them

After a successful foray into the world of Android tablets, Amazon finally made a move into the smartphone arena following years of rumors. Impressive hardware and a unique 3D interface and capabilities were let down by a hefty price point. That said, if you did pick up the Fire Phone, you may have come across some issues in your daily use. Today, we’ll be taking a closer look at the some of the common problems that plague Fire Phone owners, and offer potential solutions on how to fix them.

Disclaimer: Not every user of the Amazon Fire Phone will face these issues, and it is quite likely that you won’t come across any of the problems listed below.

Problem #1 – Wi-Fi doesn’t connect

Many new smartphones come with Wi-Fi connection problems and the Fire Phone is no exception.

Potential Solutions:

  • Try restarting the fire phone by pressing and holding Power and tapping Restart
  • Toggle Airplane mode on and off again.
  • Turn both the phone and the router off for at least thirty seconds, then turn them back on.
  • Make sure the phone is up to date by going to Settings – Device – Install system updates – Check now.
  • Use an application like Wi-Fi Analyzer to check how busy your Wi-Fi channel is, and switch if necessary.
  • Go into Settings – Wi-Fi then select your network and Try adding the network again and ensure you enter the correct password.
  • Check that your router firmware is up-to-date by checking with the manufacturer or ISP.
Problem #2 – SIM doesn’t work

It’s important to remember that the Amazon Fire Phone is available exclusively from AT&T, and is not compatible with any other network. That said, users with AT&T SIM cards have faced some connectivity issues.

Potential Solutions:

  • Contact AT&T and ask them for an unlock PIN for the phone.
  • If you’re not an AT&T customer, you will need to sign up for AT&T services before being able to use this device.
Problem #3 – Texts, calls and network connection not working

Some Fire Phone users have complained that they have trouble receiving and sending texts, making calls, or connecting to their mobile network. All of these issues could be related to your carrier, however, the fault is sometimes to do with the phone itself.

Potential Solutions:

  • Make sure you don’t have Airplane mode switched on.
  • Check that the Fire Phone is up to date.
  • Restart the device by holding the Power button and tapping
  • If you switched phones from an iPhone, you may have problems if you did not deactivate iMessage before transferring your SIM card. You can still deactivate iMessage by reinserting the SIM into an apple phone and going to Settings – Messages. If you no longer have an iPhone you will have to call Apple support.
  • Make sure your network plan covers all of the data that you need.
  • Go to Settings – Device – Get info about your Fire and check that the serial number, phone number and IMEI are listed. If they aren’t, you’ll have to contact AT&T about activating your device.
Problem #4 – Issues with purchasing and accessing content

Some users have reported issues purchasing applications or content from the Amazon App Store. In other instances, purchased content does not show up on the phone, or doesn’t work when they try to access it.

Potential solutions:

  • Make sure the Fire Phone is connected to the internet through mobile or Wi-Fi connection.
  • Go into Settings and toggle Airplane mode on and off again.
  • If you are in an area with poor Wi-Fi wait until you are in a more stable location to purchase content.
  • Verify your registration by going to Quick actions – Settings – My Accounts – Deregister your phone. If the wrong account is listed, tap Deregister and then tap Registeragain to set up the correct account.
Problem #5 – Limited content

Some users have complained that there are numerous applications missing from the Amazon store that they could get in the Google Play store.

Potential solutions:

  • Use a cloud service to transfer applications onto the Fire Phone.
  • Connect the device to a computer and simply drag and drop files.
  • Go into Settings – Applications & Parental controls and select Allow non-Amazon app installation. Tap OK when the warning appears.
  • Download applications as APK files from the Google Play Store on your desktop or from an alternative app store.
Problem #6 – Phone overheats

Many Fire Phone owners have commented that their device suffers from overheating.

Potential Solutions:

  • Make sure you’re not running any unnecessary applications that could be overworking your processor.
  • Try restarting the phone by holding down the Power button and selecting
  • Try going to Settings – Display – Configure low motion settings and turning off Dynamic Perspective. This can also improve battery life.
  • Some users have commented that the latest software version 3.5.1 helps with the problem by providing enhanced performance. Check you’re up to date by going toSettings – Device – Install system updates – Check now.
Problem #7 – Crashing and freezing problems

Some users have commented that their phone experiences freezing or crashing problems when using certain applications.

Potential Solutions:

  • Restart your phone by holding the Power button then selecting If your phone screen doesn’t respond, simply hold the Power button until the device shuts down.
  • Make sure that all applications are up to date by going to My Apps – App Updates.
  • Make sure the phone is up to date by going to Settings – Device – Install system updates – Check Now.
  • Go into Settings – Applications and uninstall applications one by one to see if this removes the problem, or do a factory reset and selectively reinstall.
Problem #8 – Bad battery life

Potential Solutions:

Long-awaited Razer Nabu smartband up for pre-order tomorrow in US

The long-awaited Razer Nabu smartband, which was first revealed at CES back in January, finally has a pre-orders date – tomorrow, December 2. Razer announced today that the Nabu will be available first in North America on RazerStore, with selected retailers to be announced later.

But there’s a catch. Two of them, in fact. A Razer representative confirmed to Tech in Asia that only 5,000 units are available in the first batch, and they can be snapped up only by “Razer Insiders.” The price for Insiders is just US$79.99, but the regular price will be US$99.99.

There’s no date yet for any other country or for truly public sales in the US.

The Nabu – which does phone alerts and fitness tracking – will be available in two sizes and in four colors (green, white, orange, and black), but only black is available at first.

Razer is best known for gaming hardware. The Nabu is the first foray into smart gadgets for the Singapore-US company. Min-Liang Tan, the co-founder and CEO of Razer, said in today’s announcement:

The Razer Nabu has undergone extensive consumer and developer testing, all of which is providing feedback toward the final retail-ready device. This has ensured that with all the features polished — discreet notifications, fitness tracking, social capabilities, and more — the Razer Nabu is a device that has something cool in-store for everyone.

The Huawei Ascend Mate7 review

Chinese electronics giant, Huawei, has just officially launched its newest flagship phablet - theHuawei Ascend Mate7 - here in the Philippines. So for those who've long been waiting for this amazing release, now is your chance to get it.
Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines
Huawei Device Philippines CEO, Dr. Gavin Dai, and I at the posh The Palace in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, where the landmark local launch of the Mate7 was held last Friday, November 20, 2014.

Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines

The highlight of the program was the introduction of the Mate7's seven key features or main selling points, which the company was able to do both via a game for dealers and members of the media before the event started and through this engaging keynote presented by Mr. Al Dimapilis, Marketing Manager of Huawei Device Philippines:

According to Huawei, "Launched at Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) 2014 in Berlin Germany, Huawei Mate7 is set to launch in the Philippines this [November 20, 2014]. Armed with more surprising high-end features at reasonable price, Huawei promised to delight Filipino consumers with its fastest and most compelling big-screen smartphone experience to date."

Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines

Equipped with a massive 6-inch Full HD IPS display panel underneath scratch resistant Gorilla Glass 3 touchscreen and powered by a large 4,100 Li-Po battery pack delivering up to 24 hours of uptime with mixed usage, the Ascend Mate 7 pushes the boundaries of how large a smartphone can be while delivering good imaging performance with its 13 MegaPixel main camera and 5 MP front cam, and providing stellar gaming and overall mobile experience with its powerhouse Octa Core HiSilicon Kirin 925 chipset incorporating four 1.8 GHz ARM Cortex A15 cores and four 1.3 GHz ARM Cortex A7 CPUs plus Mali-T628 GPU.

Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines

One of the unique features of this release can be found on its back panel. Huawei Mate7’s fingerprint sensor is the world’s fastest way to wake up your phone. It enables users to unlock the phablet at least 80% faster than devices supporting a slower finger-sweeping recognition option. Unlike the traditional swipe-style scanner on other smartphones, the Mate7 uses a more convenient one-touch fingerprint sensor, ergonomically located on a spot where index finger usually lands when holding the device.

Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines

Measuring 9.16 x 9.16 mm, this reader supports up to five different fingerprint records which can be allocated to normal and guest modes, letting the user switch modes to enhance protection when securing private folders, apps, and even payment information. It has a higher 508PPI ratio for enhanced accuracy so there's no need to swipe repeatedly before finally unlocking the device – even with wet fingers or under high humidity and light rain conditions. Mate7's ARM TrustZone software likewise stores encrypted data of the fingerprint just within the chipset for better protection by SecureOS, and prevents access by third-parties.

Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines

Huawei Ascend Mate7 runs Android 4.4 KitKat operating system with Emotion UI 3.0 skin. This app-drawer-free and sleek interface reminiscent of iOS and MIUI is created by Huawei to provide a simplified and supposedly more intuitive and enjoyable touch experience to consumers.

Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines
With Huawei Mate7, you don't have to choose between strength and style. Its svelte all-metal frame gives the phablet the look and feel of both elegance and durability.

Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines
Huawei Mate7 is a Dual SIM, Dual Standby, Dual LTE phablet with two SIM slots - nanoSIM and microSIM - both supporting the latest Cat6 LTE connectivity and up to 300Mbps download speeds. This means that you can harness all the power of your mobile networks and enjoy ultra-fast connection without compromises anywhere you go.

Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines
The Octa Core HiSilicon Kirin 925 SoC paired with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of expandable storage gives the Mate7 an Antutu Benchmark Score in the area of 41,370, which is reflective of the laudable gaming and overall touch performance of the device.

Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines

TP Friends, meet Sir Oliver, Sir Chris, and Sir Adrian (L-R) of Novo7Tech! They also graced Huawei's invitation for the Mate7 launch -- but they did so as dealers. Yep, apart from being the official distributor of THL, Zopo, and Meizu smartphones in the Philippines, Novo7Tech now also carries Huawei handsets and tablets. They're our friends so if you're thinking about getting a Huawei device anytime soon, I'd recommend that you purchase it from flagship Novo7Tech stores in Mega Manila.

Huawei Ascend Mate7 Philippines

The Huawei Mate7 variant that's available in the Philippines is the gorgeous Limited Edition Amber Gold version. The phablet dons an official suggested retail price of Php 27,890 and is now available at all Huawei Concept Stores and partner retailers nationwide.
